We’ve extended our registration deadline until the end of today, November 6!  Sign up for this great class—FREE for district students, faculty, and staff!  Contact the South Seattle continuing education office at 206-934-5339!!!

The Washington State Labor Education and Research Center at South Seattle Community College, Georgetown campus is offering a 12 hour class on U.S. Labor History from 1:00 – 5:00 pm on Friday November 15th and 8:30 – 5:00 on Saturday November 16th here at the Georgetown campus. (6737 Corson Ave S Seattle 98108 – Building C Room 212.)

All students, staff or faculty members from the District are welcome FOR FREE. The usual charge is $125 per person. If you are able to pay that, or your union is able to sponsor you to participate, that’s great but we want to make sure all District students and employees are welcome. Faculty Members: Please announce this opportunity to your students and consider offering them the option of attending as part of their class work.

Labor History of the U.S.
Class Description: The dramatic struggles of workers in the U.S. for decent wages and benefits, the right to unionize, and to gain a voice on the job is woefully under-taught in our public education system. For students, union members, or community members generally, learning this important aspect of our nation’s history can help us understand our national identity and the economics of the current day. Although 12 hours is too little to cover this massive subject we will choose some particular areas to focus on. We will ask those who register to tell us what they would be particularly interested in.

We could include a regional focus on the rich labor history of the Pacific Northwest, the connection between the labor movement and the civil rights movement, or women in the labor movement, to name only a few. Register right away so you can help us decide what to cover! The class will be multi-media including pictures, artifacts, video, and music. Bring your own history and see how the stories of you and your family fit in!

The class will be taught by Labor Center staff  (and guests) including:

Director Sarah Laslett with a Master’s Degree in American Studies and years of experience in the labor movement;

Labor Educator Will Brucher with a PhD in American Labor History;

Labor Educator (and previously adjunct faculty) Lisa Pau with a law degree and years of experience as a practicing attorney in a union-side law firm.

The registration deadline is Friday November 1st. Registration runs through Continuing Education at South - http://www.learnatsouth.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=1010&&. Look under “Labor Education” in the “Professional column.” Feel free to contact the CE office (934-5339) or the Labor Center (934-5380) with questions.
